Cobb County is a county located in the state of Georgia. It's county seat and largest city is Marietta.

The population in Cobb County is estimated to be approximately 700,000. It is part of the five-county Atlanta metropolitan area. This includes, Atlanta, Sandy Springs, Marietta, Georgia metropolitan statistical area.

The county is one of the most-educated in the State of Georgia, and also among all counties in the United States. It is consistently ranked among the top 100 wealthiest counties in the United States. The school district is the largest employer with over 15,000 employees. Some major companies include: Lockheed Martin and Lectra.

Cobb County was originally named for Thomas Willis Cobb, who in the early 19th century was a United States representative and senator from Georgia. The city of Marietta was named for his wife, Mary Moore Cobb.

In the 1830's, the Georgia General Assembly cut Cobb from the huge Cherokee "county" territory. That is the land northwest of the Chattahoochee River. It was confiscated by the state from the Cherokee Nation and redistributed to settlers via lottery, following the passage of the federal Indian Removal Act.
